Former England manager Gareth Southgate has been awarded a knighthood in the King's New Year Honours list. (More Football News)

The 54-year-old resigned from the role in July, having led England to their first final on foreign soil at Euro 2024, in which they were beaten 2-1 by Spain.

The defeat to Spain came in a second consecutive European Championship final under Southgate's tenure, with their first appearance coming at Wembley in Euro 2020.

Southgate managed the national team for eight years, having replaced Sam Allardyce in September 2016, taking them to four major tournaments.

"He was so crazy about playing hockey that he would come home from school, skip meals, and head straight to practice. As Mandeep grew older, his commitment only deepened."

Under him, England reached the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the quarter-final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and the two runner-up spots in the European Championships.

He took charge of 102 England matches in total during his tenure, winning 61 of those with the team scoring 223 goals.

His 14 wins at major tournaments are the most of any manager in England's history, while they reached more finals (two) in four attempts than they did in their first 23 appearances at the World Cup and Euros.

He is the fourth England manager to be knighted, following Walter Winterbottom, World Cup winner Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson, who took the team to the 1990 World Cup semi-final.
